About Phyco Spectrum
Phyco Spectrum is involved in research and development of algae based technology to mitigate pollution, nullify global warming and help to eradicate malnutrition and energy crisis.
The conventional systems of effluent treatment are not only expensive but also created more problems when disposed in to the environment. The chemicals used in the conventional treatment generate chemical sludge. Algal technology avoids chemicals and results in excellent sludge control.
The strength of this technology lies in the ability of micro algae to mitigate pollution in a more economical, eco-friendly and natural way. Algae are the most primitive photosynthetic organisms which can very easily adapt to any hostile conditions.
Mass Cultivation of micro algae
Phycospectrum provides consultancy to estabilish micro algal farms. Optimization of critical parameters for sustained algal productivity and development of effecient and less expensive harvesting technology have been achieved through laboratory and field level research by Phycospectrum. By combining both phototrophic and heterotrophic modes of cultivation techniques very high productivity has been acheived.
Algal Farm for biodiesel production
Phycospectrum is developing an algal farm near Kolkata for biodiesel production. Micro algal cultivation using open raceway pond is underway and parameters have been optimized for nutrient input and regular harvesting. A low cast harvesting technology has been developed by combining autoflocculation and chemical flocculation. Trials are on to optimize physical and chemical parameters to achieve higher productivity and utilize flu gas.

The following are the major activities of Phycospectrum:
1. Phycospectrum Environmental Research Centre (PERC): PERC is an institutional facility for research in the field of environmental sciences, focusing presently on Pollution Control, Phycoremediation of industrial effluents and sewage, Algal biomass production, Carbon-di-oxide mitigation and bio-energy programs.
The center provides guidance and support for research scholars and guide PG and UG students for their curricular projects. MORE....

WORLD'S FIRST PHYCOREMEDIATION PLANT
World's First Phycoremediation plant: Dr V Sivasubramanian, the PHYCOREMEDIOLOGOST, has set up the First Phycoremediation plant at SNAP Industry. Algal remediation technology helps in pH correction of the acidic effluent and complete reduction of sludge formation. SNAP is now a zero disposal company. The phycoremediation plant has been in operation from September 2006. The effluent generated by the industry is highly acidic and of very high TDS ( 25000 mg/L). The entire effluent is evaporated using slope tank. The algal biomass produced is used in Biofertilizer preparation and sold by the Company. .......(.more )
