Successful restoration of the Mallorquin Swamp, Colombia by PHYCORE
The Mallorquín swamp (Atlántico-Colombia) is an ecosystem with social and environmental problems, such as wastewater discharges with a high content of organic and microbiological matter.A baseline of the state of contamination of León stream and Mallorquín swamp was successfully established, and the microalgal species present in the bodies of water were identified. With this information, the MPMC was successfully formulated and scaled up, and the inoculation process and control sampling were carried out. Technical and statistical analysis of the results was developed, managing to monitor the contamination variables of the waters of León stream and Mallorquín swamp before and during the execution of the bioaugmentation pilot with MPMC. The pilot swamp decontamination procedure was successfully developed using bioaugmentation, which the inoculation of 24,000 gallons of MPMC per week, in three discharges separated approximately 72 hours from each other. The results showed that the procedure achieved a 98% reduction in BOD, and a significant decrease in total nitrates, enterococci and coliforms, in most of the points studied.
